Uncommon, my **se!

Call me naive, but when I began my family research, I thought that my surname, BALDOCK, was fairly uncommon and that tracing people would be quite easy as a result… how wrong I was!
To top things off, I received my maternal grandmother’s birth certificate on Monday, which revealed her parents as George CASTLE and Sarah Elizabeth GOLDSACK. Suddenly, alarm bells started ringing …
You see, GOLDSACK is a very well researched name, is undergoing a One Name Study, and appears to have more variations than you can shake your fist at!

Time to make contact with Keith Goldsack, the researcher, I think!

A mystery deepens … !

My father’s aunt, Christine FAGG nee HAUGHTON, was the daughter of Noel HAUGHTON and Vera Marguerite NOWILL (of the reknowned Nowill family who made cutlery in Sheffield throughtout the 1800’s).
Anecdotes stated that Noel was German and changed his name from HAGGERSTADT (or any number of variants; true spelling unknown) during WWI, presumably to avoid repercussions.
However, having just received a copy of Noel & Vera’s marriage certificate this weekend, it lists his occupation as Chief Engine Room Artificer on H.M.S. Prince Rupert, and his father as one Robert HAUGHTON, a Marine Engineer!

Now I’m confused … ! I’ve not been able to find much beyond this for either name, and certainly am struggling to determine where to go from here.

Any suggestions welcome!!

Topsy-turvy design!

Apologies to all and anyone who has started visiting this blog – it has taken me ages to pick a theme that appears to behave itself, and do what I want! I have compromised on “Quentin”, by Mike Purdy (thank, Mike!), for it’s retro appearance which probably suits a history site better!

.. But don’t be surprised if I change my mind again in the future!
